AMBIENDURA ORGANISES INECE SEAPORT NETWORK KICK OFF MEETING, 9-10 OCTOBER

To launch a new initiative against illegal transport and management of waste, Ambiendura is organising a kick off meeting for the INECE Seaport Network at Interpol’s office in Lyon (France), from 9 to 10 October.

At this meeting, representatives from environmental authorities, customs and police forces representing 14 countries and international organisations as UNEP, Green Customs Initiative and Interpol, will meet to discuss a way forward in their fight against illegal waste shipped through seaports.

Waste transported to destinations and facilities that are not allowed or inadequate to treat it can cause harm to both the environment and human health. Various agreements and rules are in place worldwide to regulate the movements of waste. Implementation and enforcement are essential to give effect to these provisions.

The inability to perform inspections, to track waste shipments and the lack of information sharing and national and cross-border collaboration between key partners, lead to failure in the detection, deterrence and prevention of illegal transboundary movements of hazardous waste. Bringing together involved authorities and facilitate collaboration is the foundation for meeting this challenge, initiated by INECE.

The Seaport Network will focus on raising awareness and capacity building measures, and foster international enforcement collaboration.
