On 23 September, AmbienDura represented the secretariat of the IMPEL-TFS network at a meeting of the Joint Working Group (JWG) of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA). This association promotes and develops sustainable waste management worldwide. In de week from 24 to 27 September their annual conference takes place in Amsterdam (The Netherlands). During one of the side-events of this conference, the Joint Working Group met and invited IMPEL-TFS and the Secretariat of the Basel Convention (SBC) to discuss issues related to Global Recycling and implementation and enforcement of waste shipments rules. The SBC representative explained the different pillars of the Basel Convention and the current focus, which is on the development of guidelines to promote environmentally sound management of waste and regional agreements on waste management. AmbienDura as IMPEL-TFS-representative presented the ongoing projects and obstacles encountered during the practical implementation and enforcement of waste shipment rules. After the presentations, a lively and interesting discussion took place. Also by members of the JWG of ISWA, it was endorsed that an actual implementation and equivalent enforcement should be aimed for. Furthermore views were exchanged regarding minimum standards for waste treatment. Should they be equal worldwide, or may they differ per state or region? Also it was questioned whether global recycling should be promoted, as long as the final treatment of the waste or recyclables is still difficult to verify and authorities do not collaborate adequately.
